The Iraq Foundation was awarded a grant from the US Department of State Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues to implement a 24 month project for Iraq aimed at strengthening Iraqi laws to protect women’s rights. The programs in the project sought to reinforce the framework of women’s rights by promoting and facilitating stronger and more effective legislation aimed at protecting those rights enshrined in the constitution and in line with international human rights standards.
The goal of the Women for Equitable Legislation (WEL) project was to reinforce the framework of women’s rights by promoting and facilitating stronger and more effective legislation aimed at protecting those rights enshrined in the constitution and in line with international human rights standards.
To strengthen and uphold the rights of women, the Iraq Foundation, working with a range of stakeholders, built the capacity of legislators to introduce legal reforms that address gaps in existing legislation, and raise public awareness and public support for required legislation. The Iraq Foundation undertook an open and participatory legal reform process involving members of parliament, relevant ministries, non-governmental organizations, Provincial Council members, and other stakeholders, to ensure participatory deliberations and ownership of legal reforms consistent with the constitution and human rights.
The project had four objectives:
Objective 1: Legislators, Civic Activists, and Legal Experts coalesce on achievable priority areas for legal reform and create a plan to strengthen women’s rights in Iraq; and
Objective 2: Draft legislation that protects women’s rights; and
Objective 3: Advocate for the passage of draft legislation that protect women’s rights; and
Objective 4: Promote the ratification of proposed legislative measures in the Iraqi Council of Reprentitives (COR).
