UNIFEM awarded the Iraq Foundation a grant to train social workers on conflict resolution methods and techniques, which address family abuse and conflict with a particular focus on women and children, in the southern Iraqi Governorate of Basra. The project began in on September 1, 2007 and was completed on January 9, 2008. The project had two objectives: to help prevent domestic violence and abuse in Basra and to train 10 social workers on methods to resolve domestic disputes based on personal status laws.
To achieve these goals, IF hosted a workshop in Sulaimaniya for Iraqi social workers and trainers from the Southern governorate of Basra during the last week of December. Click here to view the photos!
With these new techniques, these social workers helped nearly 250 families by either resolve family disputes non-violently or helping protect women and children from harm in separations, over a four month period.
